If your skin is feeling red, dry, and irritated right now, you’re not alone.

Winter weather can be brutal on your face and body, no matter your skin type.

The cold air, lack of humidity, and indoor heating zap moisture from your skin, leading to dryness, itchiness, and irritation—even if you’ve never had skin issues before.

And if you deal with common skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or even acne, winter can make things even worse, leaving your skin red, inflamed, and extra sensitive.

The good news? We got expert advice on how to calm winter redness and dryness so you can bring your skin back to life.

E! spoke with Dr. Dara Spearman, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and owner of Radiant Dermatology Associates in Fort Wayne, IN, and Joelle O’Connor, a licensed esthetician from Schweiger Dermatology Group in Hackensack, NJ, to get their top tips on how to fight winter dryness and redness from skin irritation—and win.

Ready to give your skin some relief? Here’s what they recommend.

Dr. Spearman explains that several factors contribute to winter skin woes.

“In cold weather, blood vessels constrict near the skin to help maintain core body temperature. When you move into a warm environment, those vessels rapidly expand, increasing blood flow and leading to redness.”

Beyond temperature fluctuations, she points to dryness, skin barrier disruption, and wind exposure as key culprits behind red, dry, and irritated skin.

As tempting as it is, you may want to skip the steaming hot shower. “Hot water feels great on a cold morning, but it can further dry out and irritate your skin,” Dr. Spearman warns.

“Instead, use lukewarm water and keep your shower under 10 minutes.” She even recommends setting a timer—because, let’s be honest, 10 minutes goes by fast!

When it comes to cleansing, O’Connor advises using mild, soap-free cleansers that gently remove dirt without stripping hydration.

“Avoid harsh ingredients like AHAs and BHAs if your skin is already dry—they can further deplete moisture and irritate the skin barrier,” she says.

Dr. Spearman also suggests looking for skincare products with soothing ingredients like aloe vera, niacinamide, and squalane to calm inflammation.

And don’t skimp on moisturizer! “Opt for a rich, hydrating formula with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or glycerin to help restore the skin barrier and lock in moisture,” she recommends.

For an extra hydration boost, O’Connor suggests adding an occlusive product to seal in moisture.

“Occlusives form a protective barrier on the skin to prevent water loss. Apply them over your creams to maximize hydration,” she explains. The best occlusives include petrolatum, mineral oil, olive oil, and argan oil.

However, she cautions that those with acne-prone or oily skin may want to avoid occlusives, as they can trigger breakouts. And don’t forget sunscreen!

“Many people skip SPF in the winter, but UV rays still penetrate the skin—even more so if there’s snow reflecting sunlight,” Dr. Spearman adds. “A gentle, broad-spectrum sunscreen is key for year-round protection.”
