Boardwalk Empire alum Devin Harjes has died after battling cancer. He was 41. Find out more about the actor’s life and career.
The acting community is in mourning.
Devin Harjes, who starred on shows such as Boardwalk Empire and Manifest, has died. He was 41.
The actor passed away in a New York City hospital May 27 from complications from cancer, a few months after his diagnosis, his rep confirmed to NBC News.
“He was an artist of great conviction who never gave less than one hundred percent to any role he undertook,” the rep said in a statement to the outlet June 1. “As a person, he was generous, kind, understanding and devoted to his family and friends, a great horseback rider and had a magic way with all animals.”
Harjes was born and raised in West Texas. “His life began with the rhythm of hooves and the open plains—just three days after he was born, his father carried him and his sister on horseback,” his obituary read. “That early bond with animals and the rodeo spirit stayed with him and later became the unlikely but perfect foundation for a life in the performing arts.”
Harjes studied acting in college and launched his career in the Dallas–Fort Worth theatre scene, where he starred in productions of plays such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. He soon moved to New York City, where he performed in off-Broadway shows and independent films.
He made his TV debut in 2011, playing Jack Dempsey in Boardwalk Empire. In the following years, the actor appeared on shows such as Blue Bloods, Orange Is the New Black, Gotham, Daredevil and Elementary. His most recent role, which came in 2020, was also his most prominent—Pete Baylor on the series Manifest.
Outside of acting, Devin “was a dedicated student of martial arts and a regular at the gym,” his obituary read, adding that “he often joked it was safer than getting kicked in the face by a horse.”
The actor is survived by his parents Randy Harjes and Rosanne Harjes, his sister Trish Harjes, his ex-wife Shiva Shobitha and other loved ones.
“Devin lived his dream with heart and grit,” his obituary read. “He brought characters to life, lifted others up, and always made room for laughter. He is deeply missed by his family, friends, and his cat Maude.”
