Joanna Gaines Talks Sending Oldest Daughter Ella Off to College

Fixer Upper‘s Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines unpacked their conflicting emotions of sending daughter Ella Gaines, 18, off to college this year.

Joanna Gaines is fixing up her emotions as she prepares for another one of her kids to head off to college.

The Fixer Upper star—who shares Drake, 20, Ella, 18, Duke, 17, Emmie, 15, and Crew, 7, with husband Chip Gaines—revealed that she might have a more difficult time saying goodbye to Ella than she did to Drake, who is already in college.

“Ella, our second kiddo, she’s graduating this year,” Joanna told People in a joint interview with Chip published July 8, “so we’re going through that again with another kid leaving the nest and trying to stay emotionally stable.”

After her husband asked her if she thought it would be “harder” to deal with Ella leaving home than their oldest, the 47-year-old didn’t hesitate, pointing to their special mother-daughter relationship inevitably changing.

“Yes. I think there’s an emotional difference,” Joanna responded. “With Ella, we love to go to antiques shops, plant shops and go get coffee—that’s our rhythm. I kind of feel like I’m losing a friend in my everyday life.”

“It feels like what’s coming this summer will be a tidal wave of emotions,” she continued, “and I am not going to brace; I’m going to stand there and take it with him.”

That being said, the Magnolia Table author can’t wait to see Ella spread her wings and cultivate her identity outside of her famous parents.

“She’s excited about going somewhere and just being known for her,” Joanna shared. “She’s like, ‘I don’t want anyone knowing that you’re…I just want to go and be myself.’ I’m excited for her to learn. She’s about to see some stuff. She’s going to teach us stuff.”

For his part, Chip, 50, echoed his wife’s sentiments, saying that he looks forward to Ella helping him to understand her and her generation better.

“I feel like a grandpa learning,” he joked. “I don’t feel perfectly equipped to manage some of these very interesting modern-day things that some of these kids are going through. So she’s going to get thrown in the deep end, man. I’m very excited about that.”

“And in four years, the youngest of our original four will have graduated,” Chip added. “What are we going to do with this chaotic, crazy life that we’ve built for ourselves?”
