Review – Krypto, Last Dog of Krypton #2: Good Dog, Bad Owner

Ray: Ryan North is making his DC debut with this story – but it’s not all sunshine and roses for the best boy of Krypton. Krypto looks very different here than he does in Superman Unlimited, but the spirit is the same. However, fair warning – our favorite boy is going through it in this book. He first was sent from Krypton as a test subject on what was supposed to be a short mission, but turned into a trip through a wormhole to Earth. Separated from his family, he now finds himself alone on a strange planet – only to be found by a young Lex Luthor. Lex is currently living in Metropolis with some distant relatives in a shanty town as he plans to make his fortune – and how he plans to do that is with a bomb that will sacrifice his relatives in order to get the insurance policy he’s taken out on them. We see many shades of the Lex Luthor we know all too well – but this issue is likely to make you hate him much more.

The main warning I have about this issue is that if you’re sensitive to animal abuse, this might not be for you. Krypto gets smacked around, yanked on a leash, and crated repeatedly. It’s hard to watch – but somehow, Lex always seems to back down when he goes too far and doesn’t throw Krypto out. It’s amost like he needs some companionship even if he won’t admit it – and he also needs a sounding board for his big plan. There still seems to be some humanity in him, even if he tries very hard to keep it buried. But in the end, his plan goes off – just not how he intended it to, leaving Krypto in the middle of it and forcing the dog to realize what his first master on Earth actually is. But Krypto’s journey is far from over – he’s now alone again, and who knows who he’ll meet in the next issue. It’s a great look into the hidden chapters of a character everyone is going to love now.
