Review – Superman Unlimited #3: Krypto vs. Kryptonite

Ray: With the new wave of Kryptonite on Earth, everything has gotten more dangerous for the Super-family – and that includes the best boy on Earth. This issue focuses on Krypto – not just in the new paradigm, but looking back at his time on Earth. I did notice that this Krypto seems to be the adorable scruffy white mutt from the movie – who doesn’t exactly match up with the one starring in his own series right now. Oh, well – two good boys are better than one. A flashback shows Krypto being a hellion as he arrives on Earth, and young Clark trying to teach him how to handle those things more fragile than him. It’s still a work in progress, and one that continues as the Super-family splits details on looking after him. Today, it’s Jon Kent’s turn to handle it – after all, he’s currently unemployed and living with his parents again after his Secret Six adventure, and that means he’s free for chore duty.

Superman, meanwhile, is occupied with another threat – an exhibit hosted by the world capitol of Kryptonite. Making things even more perilous, there’s evidence that the exhibit is collaborating with Toyman – which means the villain might have his hands on Kryptonite. This bears out as Krypto tries to make his way home from Smallville alone, only to encounter a giant robot piloted by the villain. As he tears his way through the machine, he encounters its Kryptonite heart – and that kicks off some of the most emotional content of the series so far. But there’s a surprise coming, one that reinvents the character of Toyman in a very intriguing way and hints at a lot of the themes Slott was so well known for in his extended Spider-Man run. This is ultimately a hopeful book that argues that change is always possible – whether you’re a rambunctious dog or something else entirely. And Krypto is a very good boy indeed.
