Food Network Star Anne Burrell’s Cause of Death Revealed

After Anne Burrell’s passing in June, the Food Network star’s cause of death has been revealed as suicide, according to the New York City’s medical examiner’s office.

New details have emerged in Anne Burrell’s death investigation.

The beloved Food Network star died by suicide at the age of 55 on June 17, the New York City medical examiner’s office confirmed to NBC News. Her cause of death was attributed to “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.”

The news comes after the New York Police Department previously confirmed to NBC News they responded to a call at Burrell’s home over reports of an “unconscious and unresponsive 55-year-old female” and a possible cardiac arrest. Responding emergency medical services ultimately pronounced her dead at the scene.

In the wake of the Worst Cooks in America host’s death, her loved ones—including husband Stuart Claxton, stepson Javier, mother Marlene and sister Janeshared a tribute honoring all Burrell encompassed in their family and beyond.

“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend—her smile lit up every room she entered,” her family shared with E! News in a statement. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”

And indeed, across two decades on the Food Network Burrell touched the hearts of many—including that of Gigi Hadid, who worked with the chef during a 2023 appearance on Beat Bobby Flay.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the loss of the Great Anne Burrell,” Gigi wrote on a June 17 Instagram Story over a picture of her and Burrell on the show. “As a longtime fan, getting to share this day with her was a dream come true.”

The model continued, “I wish we could have done it all again. She was awesome. Rest in Peace Legend.”

Throughout her time on the Food Network, Burrell hosted series such as Worst Cooks in America and Secrets of a Restaurant Chef in addition to countless guest appearances on other series.

Following her passing, the network mourned her loss as a “remarkable person and culinary talent,” noting her ability to teach, compete and share “the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring.”

Outside of her culinary passions, Burrell had also enjoyed dipping her toe into the world of improvisation in recent months, taking classes at New York’s Second City Training Center. In fact, she performed with the troop the night before her untimely passing.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and student, Anne Burrell,” Second City shred in a statement with E! News. “She will be missed and remembered as a vibrant part of our Second City New York Training Center community.”

The group continued, “Anne brought joy, boldness, and an unwavering ‘yes, and’ spirit. Her enthusiasm was contagious, her presence unforgettable. Our thoughts go out to Anne’s family and loved ones.”
