Anthony Anderson’s rep spoke out on a resurfaced video of a sexual comment he made about Lindsay Lohan, then 17, on The Sharon Osbourne Show, saying it was “intended as comedy.”
Anthony Anderson is speaking out on backlash against him.
The Black-ish star set the record straight after a clip of his 2003 appearance on The Sharon Osbourne Show resurfaced online, sparking controversy over comments he made to guest Lindsay Lohan when she was 17.
When the Parent Trap star shared that she had recently bought a home with Raven-Symoné, he asked, “What gentlemen will be at the new pad?”
“No one,” Lohan told Anderson, then 33, clarifying that she didn’t have a boyfriend.
“She’s single but looking!” Anderson told the crowd, before Lohan chimed in, “But I’m illegal for people that are old.”
“Well, you know, some men like ’em young,” Anderson said. “We ain’t gonna mention no names, but, you know, I’m one of ’em.”
The comedian burst into laughter before launching into questions about her acting career.
After the clip gained newfound attention online—with one social media user writing July 25 that it “hasn’t aged well”—Anderson’s rep spoke out on the criticism.
“This interview was clearly intended as comedy,” his rep told People in a statement published July 25. “He regrets if the humor was in poor taste and maintains the utmost respect for Lindsay.”
The spokesperson added, “Any implication to the contrary is both inaccurate and potentially defamatory.”
For Lohan, the public scrutiny of her personal life was one reason she stepped away from Hollywood following her early hits as a teen.
“I feel like some of [my work] got overshadowed by paparazzi and all that kind of stuff when I was younger, and that’s kind of annoying,” she told Bustle in 2024. “I wish that part didn’t happen.”
The actress—who shares son Luai, 2, with husband Bader Shammas—continued, “I feel like that kind of took on a life of its own. So that’s why I wanted to disappear. I was like, ‘Unless there’s no story here, they’re not going to focus on just my work.’”
Fortunately, Lohan, now 39, feels that Instagram has changed the game for young women in the spotlight.
“Social media is so different now than when I was younger, that everyone has control of their own story,” she noted, explaining that she still doesn’t really “pay attention” to the press. “I don’t really read stuff that comes out either. ‘Cause I know how it works, so there’s no point. And if you immerse yourself in that stuff, you’re just going to get lost, and it can just do so much to you.”
