Fans speculated ahead of And Just Like That‘s series finale Aug. 14 about whether or not Kim Cattrall would make one final cameo as Samantha Jones.
Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the Aug. 14 episode of And Just Like That.
And just like that… it’s over.
Sex and the City revival And Just Like That aired its series finale on HBO Max Aug. 14 after three seasons, representing the latest goodbye to beloved characters Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis).
But what about the series’ fourth main character Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall)?
Well, fans holding out hope for a surprise cameo from the beloved PR executive in honor of the series’ final episode were surely disappointed that Samantha did not appear in the And Just Like That series finale—nor was she even mentioned.
In fact, the only brief cameo Kim has made was in the show’s season two finale, which saw Samantha and Carrie sharing a quick phone call.
At the time, Kim’s appearance came as a surprise to many as she had previously opted out of reprising the role when the series premiered back in 2021, 17 years after Sex and the City finished its original six-season run in 2004.
And the actress made it clear after her cameo that she didn’t intend on filming any additional scenes for the series.
“This is as far as I’m gonna go,” Kim told the Today show at the time, adding that on the other hand, “I don’t think I’ll ever say goodbye to Samantha. She’s like a lot of other characters that I’ve done over the years. I get very emotionally attached and protective of my characters. She gave me so much and I’m so appreciative of her.”
As for why she wasn’t interested in fully jumping back into Samantha’s heels, Kim was clear that she didn’t want to tarnish her original turn as such a cherished character.
“It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough,” she told Variety in 2022. “I also didn’t want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear.”
Plus, she added, the version of the iconic character on And Just Like That “feels different than the Samantha that I played.”
“I’ve come to the conclusion,” Kim explained, “that really the greatest compliment I could have as an actor is to be missed.”
