KJ Apa confessed that he was still a virgin when he first starred on Riverdale and shared that hookups were common among the cast, which included Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes.
It looks like sing-alongs weren’t the only thing the Riverdale cast were getting up to in their small town.
KJ Apa—who starred as Archie Andrews on the CW series from 2017 to 2023—revealed that he wasn’t super experienced in the sex department at the age of 20 when the show first premiered.
“I was a virgin when I started on that show,” KJ shared with Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Aug. 22, “for the first couple years. I was a proud Christian boy. I was.”
However, he said sex eventually became a big topic of conversation behind the scenes of the teen drama, especially when you had that many young adults working together.
“You hook up with them, people hook up with each other,” KJ explained. “You have sex with them and stuff, and then things start happening.”
Admitting that the dynamic would sometimes “get a little complicated,” he continued, “You’re on set, and now you’re fighting with them.”
KJ—who shares 3-year-old son Sasha Vai Keneti Apa with ex Clara Berry—reiterated, “You sort of just have sex with them, and then you just sort of see what happens. It’s just part of the deal.”
But he wasn’t surprised by all the hookups, noting, “There’s a lot of drama that comes on shows like that.”
“Not to say in a gossipy kind of way,” KJ added, “but it’s just part of the environment, I guess. Part of the deal.”
Though KJ was never publicly linked to any of his Riverdale castmates, his costars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart dated from 2017 to 2020, while Camila Mendes and Charles Melton were on-again and off-again from 2018 to 2021.
And while their relationships may not have gone the distance, Camila previously shared that the journey was a bonding experience for her, Lili and costar Madelaine Petsch, who ultimately found themselves single together during season six.
“We all got out of relationships at the same time and then went through this pandemic together,” she told Paper in April 2021. “And now we’ve been bonded by how much change has happened. Me, Madelaine and Lili, specifically, we’ve never been closer than we have this season.”
She added, “It’s really nice to have them, to feel like I do have friendships here—meaningful ones.”
