Travis Kelce wanted to make sure Taylor Swift had the best day.
So, when it came time to plan his proposal, the Kansas City Chiefs player was worried about the “perfect way” to pop the question—but his dad Ed Kelce and her dad Scott Swift encouraged him to take the plunge.
“It was a couple weeks ago that Travis got it done, after a few weeks of prodding from myself and from Scott Swift,” Ed told Today Australia Aug. 26. “He was going to do it, but wanted to find the perfect way to ask her and to make it special.”
Their fatherly advice? As Ed noted, “We kept trying to tell him, ‘When you do it, that’s what makes it special. So, don’t fret on where. Just get it done.’”
As Ed explained to ABC News 5 Cleveland, he assuaged the NFL star’s fears by telling him, “You know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event.”
And that’s one reason the 74-year-old wasn’t surprised to get a call from Travis and Taylor on Aug. 10, when they Facetimed him to reveal they had gotten engaged at his home garden in Missouri, before the couple announced the news publicly on Aug. 26 alongside photos of her massive diamond ring.
“A lot of us, certainly Travis’s mother and Taylor’s parents, we’ve all expected this for a little while now,” Ed confessed to Today. “They’re just so good together. They really are. And they’re both so happy.
Describing his future daughter-in-law as “a wonderful young lady,” Ed revealed why Taylor simply belongs with Travis: “She’s very good for him and they just complement each other so well.”
It’s a dynamic Taylor herself has highlighted in her songs about her fiancé, pointing out how they excel in different fields on her 2024 track “So High School” by singing, “You know how to ball, I know Aristotle.”
The Grammy winner echoed the sentiment when she captioned photos of their rosy proposal Aug. 26, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s love story began in July 2023, when the singer’s Eras Tour made a stop at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
As a huge Swiftie, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end caught the show with hopes of giving Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it. However, he failed to complete the pass due to her pre-show rituals.
“I was disappointed that she doesn’t talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings,” Travis shared on the July 26 episode of his New Heights podcast. “So, I was a little butt-hurt I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her.”
Summer 2023: This Is Him Trying
After publicly recounting his fumble—a move Taylor would later describe as “metal as hell”—Travis decided to shoot his shot and invite the Grammy winner to watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium.
“I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court,” he shared on The Pat McAfee Show. “I told her, you know, ‘I’ve seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one’s a little more lit.’ So, we’ll see what happens in the near future.”

Travis was rocking a mustache—which he debuted in August during training camp—when he was first introduced to Taylor.
