Ray: It’s the penultimate issue of this tribute to the work of Loeb and Sale, and with only one issue to go, this issue brings in Chris Samnee to approximate a tone that’s more like a soap opera than a noir thriller. The Falcone family has brought in its team from abroad to reclaim its power after a series of murders, and Selina Kyle has sided with them. This pits Bruce and Selina against each other for the first time in this series, with Bruce exposing her role in her own shooting. But as Batman and Robin continue to dig into the mysteries surrounding the Falcones, they discover some surprising ties to the Dents. In the end, Selina’s involvement in the Falcone clan comes to light, and it feels like this takes this more out of continuity than previous minis, given the big twist involved here. Samnee’s art is more distinct from Sale’s than some past issues, but it definitely has a slightly different flair from his usual style.
Ray: This series has been building some epic tension since the start, and the main event is finally here. General Zod has arrived on Earth, thinking himself the last Kryptonian – and he’s ready to kill anyone in his way, including his fellow Kryptonian. So most of this issue is a slam-bang epic battle, with the entire Justice League pitted against Zod and Luthor, with more than one character nearly falling along the way. The newest additions to the team, Victor Stone and Jay Garrick, are figuring out their new powers, and a new version of Huntress is an interesting twist on the character. The visuals of this series are great, but it seems like with so many players, including a very entertaining version of Constantine, the plotting can get a tiny bit muddled at times. But it’s one of the most interesting universes that’s come out of DC’s Elseworlds so far, and this new volume is a great addition.
