Ray: This new all-ages adventure takes place completely outside of the DCU, making it a rarity for the company – and sort of a companion piece to the last book by this creative team, Seven Secrets. It finds a diverse group of modern kids finding a collection of mystical weapons, each one containing the spirit of a famous figure from Arthurian mythology. They’ve been chosen to inherit the weapons and the powers – and that means a lot of people are out for their blood. Fel, who inherited Excalibur and the spirit of Arthur, is keeping a low profile at the moment – trying to hide the sword from her mother and training with it when she can. While the idea of adventure is appealing to her, clearly, she’s not jumping head-first in – although she may not have a choice. Because some powerful forces are watching all of these kids – and they’re closing in on the first weapon they want to take back.
And then there’s Kevin, who inherited the sword of Lancelot and has a much more fractious relationship with his new spirit guide. He lives alone with his Grandmother, accompanying the eccentric old lady to bingo and tugging the ham that she won in the game. Despite bickering with his sword, he’s determined to protect it – especially when a team of mysterious Men in Black show up to invade his house and intimidate them. There’s a great surprise about Grandma that shouldn’t be spoiled, but this character reminds me of another Boom book’s underrated star at the moment. By the time the young heroes escape and reunite, they know a little more about their powers – and who’s after them. The ending reveals who the last member of the gang is carrying on the legacy for, and it really feels like this adventure is just heating up. It still has a very graphic novel-esque vibe, but it’s a very entertaining start.
