‘Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack’ Adds More Danger for ‘HeroQuest’

Zargon’s minions are at your doorstep, threatening the place you call home. Armed only with your effects and an ancient map of elvish origin, you must journey deep underground in search of a long-lost crypt. Here, a fallen knight’s tomb is rumored to contain a powerful artifact. Heroes, you must keep this treasure out of Zargon’s hands–you’re the only hope for your people.

HeroQuest has had many quest packs released since the core game was re-launched in 2021. One quest pack was only available from the Kickstarter. However, Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack is now available for sale with new components not included in the original release.

Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack is an expansion for the HeroQuest gaming system. The core game is required to play these quest packs. They are is designed for 2-5 players, ages 14 and up, and takes about 30-120 minutes to play. They are currently available for $34.99 from the Hasbro Pulse website. It is also available from Amazon. The quest pack is published by Avalon Hill and Hasbro.

Here is what you get in the box:

Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack includes one plastic miniature of a black dragon with a metallic finish. This enemy will be revealed during the quest.

The cards included in this pack not only are foil-embellished, but also have a unique type of art and fonts. There are 7 alchemy cards with potions, 3 artifact cards, and 10 artifact cards.

The quest pack includes a two-sided room tile used for some quests as well as a sheet of counters representing traps and other items revealed during the quests.

The six attack and two movement dice are all black and themed for this quest pack. They can also be used for any games of HeroQuest.

I have been a fan of HeroQuest since the original was released over 30 years ago. If you are not familiar with the series, here is a link to my review of the core game that was updated and rereleased a few year ago. Since that time, I have been impressed with Hasbro and Avalon Hill’s release of several expansions to HeroQuest. In fact, with 10 expansions called quest packs and some available online, there are almost 140 quests that adventurers can play through! Each quest pack continues the story began in the core game. Though there is chronological order to the quests, you can play any quest pack at any time and each story is unique while contributing to the overall tale. Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack is the latest and offers a challenge to players as they progress through the 10 quests.

As mentioned earlier, some of the components have a new look that is unique to this quest pack with different fonts, colors, and more. Unlike most quests where the heroes enter a dungeon and work their way through, the first quest in Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack places the heroes inside a tavern around a table. Zargon’s forces have taken over their town and the quest begins with monsters already in the room with the heroes. As a result, the action starts right away with a fight on the first first turn.

Hasbro has previously released a companion app which is a great resource. It will play as Zargon letting all of the players be heroes. It also works wonderfully for solo games. I have used it for many of the quest packs and Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack is already available for the app. The app also includes the four quests that have only been available online. While playing through a quest, the app reveals the map as the heroes explore and also moves the monsters and rolls for their attacks. It also responds to players’ searches for traps, treasure, and secret doors.

I have enjoyed all of the many quests I have played over the years. Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack is no exception. I really like the story that starts in a tavern and takes players through a variety of locations until they arrive at the Crypt of Perpetual Darkness. Several of the quests have unique enemies that are more powerful than standard monsters. Not are the ten quests both fun and challenging to play, I also like the new cards for equipment, artifacts, and alchemy and the way they look. Other quest packs have added cards, but they always looked similar to those in the core game. The foil-embossed treatment on these cards really make this quest pack feel special. I highly recommend Joe Manganiello’s The Crypt of Perpetual Darkness Quest Pack as an excellent addition to the HeroQuest system. If you are already playing the game, be sure to get this quest pack. If you have not already begun playing HeroQuest, then I suggest consider doing so. It is a GeekDad Approved game and a great game to play with friends and family.
