Review – Green Lantern Dark #7: The Light Shines Again

Ray: The Tangent Universe has been one of my favorite little corners of the DCU for the longest time. An alternate universe where a nuclear World War III created a whole new wave of heroes, it combines sci-fi, fantasy, and so much more to reinvent its heroes with only the original names. We hadn’t kept up on it for the last few decades – and then this creative team plunged us right back into it in a shadowy supernatural post-apocalyptic thriller. Its Lantern-bearing hero Rina did the best she could to keep her fellow survivors alive, but in the end she was overcome by the twisted power of Queen Demona and succumbed to death. But as we all know, that’s hardly the end of the story in this world. She finds herself in the Green, a space where the past Green Lanterns hold court, and hears their often haunting, often beautiful stories. And then she’s forced to make a choice – death or life?

It’s not the biggest surprise what she chooses – she is a hero, whether she admits it or not, and there are still people to save including her friends. The beast Garr has lost himself with grief and rage, and is currently rampaging his way towards Demona’s sanctum. The demon queen is ready to complete her plan and consolidate her hold over the world. And the Bat-Wraith is forced to make one last stand that’s been building since medieval times. In some ways, though, the true hero of this issue is…everyone else, as the entire world comes together to provide light and hope, and give Green Lantern the power she needs. This feels like the proper conclusion to the Tangent Universe that it never got, giving some characters true final acts that feel right. The art is gorgeous, the writing shows someone with a true love for this universe, and this goes down as a great surprise project for the fans.
