Ray: After the previous arc dropped one epic reveal after another, including the first hints we’ve gotten of the Absolute Universe’s Atlantis and the big reveal that Themyscira was still around in an alternate universe, it’s easy to think that Kelly Thompson might dial things back for a bit. Not so much! Hayden Sherman is taking a well-deserved break this issue, with Matias Bergara jumping on board for an arc, and this story focuses on Diana’s search for answers about her heritage. Now that she knows there are Amazons still out there, she’s working with Barbara Minerva to find any trace of their existence in history. There are possible hints of them in epic battles against mythical beasts – but it’s not clear if there are any survivors. And with Steve Trevor heading back to base, Diana will be facing any new threats alone – and they start coming quickly when a casino comes under attack by a mystery being.
This creature manifests itself as a living being of electricity, not only destroying anything it comes into contact with but seeming to emit corrupting energy. Anything it touches starts feeling awful, acting in aggressive and out-of-character ways, and generally being poisoned by its presence. It seemingly teleports around the world, appearing and wreaking havoc anywhere it wants, and Diana is barely able to keep pace with it, always losing it eventually. It’s the most frustrating villain she’s ever faced, and it drives her to extremes – using rituals that take a lot out of her in search of answers. Guest artist Bergara stays on-model for the characters, but the art style feels a little grittier than Sherman and it works for this issue. The twist reveal is brilliant, but also makes total sense and feels natural. I’m still not sure if this is the best Absolute book, but it makes that case for itself every single month.
