Review – Justice League Unlimited #12: The Last Temptation of Earth

Ray: DC KO is turning into the largest-scale DC event in a long time, and that means there is time for all sorts of epic tie-ins that feel almost big enough to be an event story in their own right. That’s definitely the case for this issue, which features Mark Waid revisiting one of his most iconic DC stories, Underworld Unleashed. The heroes left on Earth while the heavy hitters participate in the tournament are working to oversee the evacuation – but that’s complicated when Polka-Dot Man successfully hospitalizes Batgirl and Atom, the latest Z-list hero who has been mysteriously powered up. It turns out that Neron is back up to his old tricks – providing power-ups and potentially passage for safe harbor in Hell in exchange for villains who do his bidding. And to take him on at the source, Mister Terrific needs help from unlikely heroes – the time-displaced ones left here since We Are Yesterday.

While these were originally thought to be the original heroes, this group – Power Girl, Electric Superman, Hook-Hand Aquaman, Tim Drake Batman Beyond, and more – turns out to be fragments pulled from their time as temporary reflections. That means they’ll eventually cease to exist – making them perfect for a suicide mission into Hell. But before they head on their mission, they each take some time to tie up some loose ends, revisit some old friends, and discover some painful truths. Aquaman, for whom his greatest tragedy is still fresh, visits Atlantis. Power Girl leaves a message for her future self. And Guy Gardner, currently under his Warrior guise, tries to reconnect with Ice with his typical era-accurate crudeness and gets a rude awakening about his future. This issue is so continuity-dense and packed with era-accurate details that it’s the kind of thing that could only come from a master of DC like Waid.
