Ray: Morgan Hampton goes solo on this issue of Green Lantern Corps, as this issue focuses on John Stewart – and has to do a lot of heavy lifting to square the complex story that the character’s world has become. We know he died reigniting the flames of Oa – so why is he on a distant planet, playing house with Katma Tui? Well, it turns out that using the remnants of the God-like powers he obtained during his journey through the ancient world, he divided himself into two. John Stewart is still alive, but he has no memory of what’s happened over several of his defining runs – the death of his mother, the resurrection of his sister, and the many bizarre revelations of the Green Lantern verse. So he’s coming into a new status quo – one that is on the verge of already unraveling, due to the increasing turf wars between the different Corps, now that the Sinestro Corps and Red Lanterns are active again.
There’s a lot going through this issue, with the resurrection of the Lantern boot camp for a new round. Several rookie Lanterns, including Keli and Aya, are being put through their paces by Kilowog as he attempts to test not just their willpower but their teamwork skills through a series of challenging tasks. Then there’s a mysterious new creature prowling the grounds, seemingly feeding on Lanterns in a very creepy segment. And just as John returns, he’s faced with a very personal threat – the return of Fatality, his most personal arch-enemy, who is the sole survivor of Xanshi. The two once made peace, but that seems to be over now. However, John is determined to give her another chance through the multiverse like the one he got. Both this book and its sister title really deserve applause for just how big and chaotic they make this corner of the DC Universe feel, for the first time in a while.
