Review – Supergirl #7: Holiday Hijinx

Ray: This series continues to be the most delightful surprise out of DC in a long time, offering up a hefty dose of Silver Age wackiness with plenty of modern characterization. This issue takes place around Thanksgiving, with several branches of the super-family uniting for dinner. The Danvers and Lesla-Lar are preparing the meal, waiting for Kara to arrive, while Superman and Lois arrive in town to join – but Kara is otherwise occupied. She’s been transformed into a mermaid by turquoise Kryptonite, which turns out to be the creation of Princess Shark, her recurring enemy. But this time, the mutant shark isn’t seeking a fight – she needs help. Turns out she was transformed years ago into what she was by a sea hag, and she can’t fight the villain directly – so she needs someone to take up the banner. Needing to get her land legs back, Kara agrees to an unlikely tie-in with her sort-of-nemesis.

Just about everyone in this series get some attention this issue, including Kara’s new ally Luna and her close friend Lena Luthor. Lena isn’t feeling the holiday spirit and makes some comments about Thanksgiving that I’m sure a lot of readers will be cheering, while her friends try to get her to join in the meal with friends anyway. Lena is a hilarious brush of cynicism in one of DC’s sunniest and silliest books, and her friendship with Kara is a delight. The resolution to the Princess Shark storyline is one of the most bizarre things to happen in this book yet, and it adds another fun character to Kara’s circle of friends. It’s also really good to have Campbell back on art this issue – while all the guest artists have been excellent, Campbell’s style is just so perfectly suited to the strange goings-on she creates. This era of Super-books may be the best I can remember, and this one remains near the top.
