WNBA’s Courtney Williams, Natisha Hiedeman Debut “Period Red” Hair

WNBA players Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman, also known as the Stud Budz, debuted “period red” hair for a cause close to their hearts.

The Stud Budz want to encourage women and girls to not be sidelined by their time of the month.

WNBA stars Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman have dyed their hair “period red,” showcasing their new styles on the basketball court Sept. 9 as their team faced off against the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

“Periods shouldn’t hold you back in sports. A statement we live and die by,” the duo wrote on Instagram as part of a partnership with U by Kotex. “Play on your period with U by Kotex, for powerful protection.”

Wearing a matching smock bearing the words “I play on my period,” Courtney said in the video that she agreed to partner with the menstrual hygiene brand partly because she wanted to do “anything to help women feel more comfortable.”

“Us just being on the stage that we’re on, being two Black, masculine women,” the 31-year-old added, “like that in itself is great representation.”

But it also goes further than that.

“We have mothers on our team balancing basketball and parenthood,” Courtney noted, “It definitely inspired me.”

And inside the Lynx’ locker room, “period talk” is “very normal,” Natisha said, adding, “We’re super comfortable talking about it.”

The pair behind the Stud Budz Twitch channel want to normalize such conversations. “We want women, little girls, we want them to see this representation and understand that periods are a normal thing,” Courtney told People in an interview published Sept. 10. “We all go through it. We just want to let young girls know, keep playing sports.”

The 28-year-old and Courtney received support for their hair transformations from fans, Lynx Assistant Coach Rebekkah Brunson, who wrote, ” Empowerment!” and fellow WNBA star Angel Reese, who commented, “My little periodsssss.”

The Chicago Sky power forward is one of several female athletes who has spoken publicly about the challenges of playing basketball while menstruating.

“Having those kinds of conversations are hard. I mean, I’ve had an accident before where in the middle of a game I’m sprinting to the locker room,” Angel, then playing college basketball for LSU, told VIBE in 2023. “They’re like, ‘Go change your shorts, Angel.’”

“Sometimes in the middle of a game, I can’t just stop and just go take my tampon out,” she continued, “But when I get a timeout real quick, my sisters; my teammates—they’re really good about checking and make sure we’re good.”
