Ray: We’re reaching the last act of Ram V’s epic space-faring reinvention of the New Gods, with the fate of the child Kamal hanging in the balance. The boy was discovered in India, and has been a bargaining chip between the two factions ever since – with some wanting to kill him, some wanting to protect him, and the loyal forces of Darkseid looking to twist him to their ends. Now, he’s been taken into space by the Furies, with Maxwell Lord using a betrayal by the New Gods to find his location – and old enemies Mister Miracle and Orion are forced to put their differences aside and wage one last desperate fight to save him. This issue is action-packed, with Big Barda getting some of the best moments as she finally gets the chance to get some revenge against the vile Granny Goodness and deliver back a little of the pain that was given her when she was a child on Apokalips.
The issue opens with a very interesting segment featuring art by the legendary Denys Cowan, following a man who has visions of the Black Racer and abandons his previous life, trying to figure out what he’s meant to do next. This hints at the birth of a new version of this unique form of death, something that’s borne out in the final pages. The issue also has some amazing battles between other characters, including a showdown between Desaad and Mister Miracle where the sadistic Apokaliptan torturer shows just how screwed-up he is and how he can weaponize that. This has been a brilliant series, with some of the best visuals in the entire DCU courtesy of Evan Cagle and a host of guest artists, but it’s really hard to envision how this could possibly wrap up in only 22 more pages next month.
