Review – Batman and Robin #27: Fathers and Sons

Ray: We know a little more about The Quiet Man now, the mysterious hitman who feels more like he belongs in a Coen Brothers movie than a Batman comic. Recently released from prison, he’s cutting his way through Gotham’s underworld looking for one man – the Ventriloquist, who he holds responsible for the death of his son many years ago. But as driven as he is for love by his son, that changes how he approaches his criminal acts – he won’t hurt Robin, and he’s disgusted by Batman bringing the boy into the fray. But there’s a big twist to this tale – Ventriloquist isn’t in Arkham, and he doesn’t have his own crime syndicate. He had a breakdown last year, has no memory of his past life, and is living a simple life as a woodcarver while being supervised by an ally of Batman. But the Quiet Man doesn’t know any of that – and he wants his vengeance one way or another.

As the search for the former villain heats up, Batman and Robin recover from their close call and Batman continues his mission to rebuild the hospital attacked by Memento. This includes a media blitz – and the reporter he’s chosen to call in is Daily Planet award-winner Clark Kent, and his intern Jon. This allows for some fantastic segments, as Jon and Damian reunite and hang out with the Gotham City Irregulars. It’s great to see these two capturing the same brotherly energy they had in Super-Sons. There’s also a phenomenal section where Bruce and Clark talk over fatherhood, with Bruce finally airing out his anxieties about being a father away from the capes and not knowing how to relate to Damian as easily as he’d like to. Batman and Superman have one of the most complex, long-lasting friendships in DC, and there are so many little details in this issue that really drive home why.
