After Babyface was shrugged off by Grammys red carpet reporters mid-interview in favor of Best New Artist winner Chappell Roan, the legendary producer spoke out about the viral moment.
Babyface isn’t one to hold a grudge.
After the legendary producer’s interview with the Associated Press on the Grammys red carpet was interrupted in favor of an approaching Chappell Roan, he shared a polite reaction to the moment going viral.
When approached by a paparazzo for a comment on the interaction, the 12-time Grammy winner shrugged and flashed a kind smile adding, “It’s okay.”
In the now-viral clip, Babyface (real name Kenneth Edmonds) was in the middle of formulating an answer to a question about current R&B stylings, when one of the news wire’s reporters on the red carpet began calling out for Chappell, who was walking by.
Upon being interrupted, Babyface turned and said, “Go do that,” as he handed off his microphone.
However, the Associated Press faced significant backlash after as the moment from the livestream made its way across the internet, with many stars, including Khloe Kardashian, slamming the way he was treated.
“This is so disrespectful how Babyface was treated in this interview,” Khloe wrote, attaching the clip, in a Feb. 2 post on X, formerly Twitter. “Babyface has had such a significant impact on the music industry, in sooo many ways. It’s maddening to see a LEGEND not get the respect and attention they deserve. He is a pioneer and deserves so much better than this.”
The Kardashians star complimented the “class act” reaction the 65-year-old had to the moment, before emphasizing, “Big or small, old or new—you don’t treat people like this. At least not in my eyes. There’s a way to handle this and this was wrong in my opinion.”
And Khloe wasn’t the only one outraged upon seeing the clip. Others echoed that despite the legendary status of Babyface—who has worked with SZA, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé and more—it was a disrespectful move no matter who the reporters may have been interviewing.
“This is why you hire professional journalists/presenters that have honed their skills,” another user on X wrote. “The level of disrespect to anyone, let alone THE Babyface, an icon that has been making hits longer than they have been alive, is outrageous.”
organization also issued another statement the following day.
“We are deeply sorry for cutting our interview with Babyface short on our YouTube livestream of the Grammys red carpet,” the statement, shared to X Feb. 3, read. “We have apologized to him through his representative and to our viewers on the livestream.”
