Jennifer Hudson Hit in The Face by Ball During Date Night with Common

During Jennifer Hudson and Common’s date night at the New York Knicks game, where they played the Golden State Warriors, the Dreamgirls alum was struck in the face by a flying basketball.

Jennifer Hudson’s basketball outing was certainly not a slam dunk.

After all, the talk show host was hit by a flying basketball while attending the New York Knicks’ playoff game against the Golden State Warriors on March 4.

Jennifer, 43, was sitting courtside with boyfriend Common when the Knicks’ point guard, Miles McBride, lost control of the ball and it quickly flew in the couple’s direction, striking the “Spotlight” singer in the face. The moment—which was shared on X, formerly known as Twitter—shocked everyone, including one of the commentators who noticed Jennifer’s glasses took most of the hit.

“Oh no, not the glasses!” the commentator said, while another analyst added that someone should “protect” her. “Those look real expensive, too.”

In the clip, the American Idol alum is seen shockingly mouthing “wow” as she tucked her black frames—which still looked intact—in her shirt. Miles quickly came over to make sure Jennifer wasn’t hurt while Common, who somewhat knocked the ball to the side upon impact, tried comforting her by rubbing her shoulder.

While Jennifer’s courtside outing took a rocky turn, the start of her date night with the “Love of My Life” rapper—who confirmed their romance last January on her daytime talk show—wasn’t as chaotic as the accident. Before the viral hit, the duo were seen holding hands as they walked towards Madison Square Garden, their outfits cozy with a hint of casual streetwear.

Jennifer—mom to David Daniel Otunga Jr., 15, with ex-husband and former WWE star David Otunga—sported a black trench coat with a white top and jeans while Common, who carried a bag of NBA merch, wore an all-blue velour tracksuit.

The singer also shared a sneak peek into their night out on her Instagram Stories, including a sweet moment where a group of Knicks fans replicated her signature spirit tunnel from her talk show.

While Common hasn’t yet graced the EGOT’s cheerful tunnel, he’s openly talked about taking the next step in their romance.

“If I’m going to get married, it’s to her,” the 52-year-old said during an appearance on The Breakfast Club in July 2024. “This is definitely—with all due respect to all the women I’ve dated ‘cause it’s all love—but this is a really healthy and beautiful relationship. When you’re with somebody who’s from where you’re from, it’s a different kind of connection, too.”
