After Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe home Feb. 26, a friend of the Unforgiven actor claimed he owed his long life to his wife.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa’s loved ones are giving insight into their final years together.
After the couple were found dead in their Santa Fe home late last month—with authorities sharing that Betsy, 65, had died from the effects of a viral infection, while Gene, 95, died a week later due to complications from Alzheimer’s—the couple’s loved ones discussed the dynamic the pair shared in their final days.
Gene’s longtime friend Tim Allin told the New York Times in an article published March 8 that his friend would have died “long ago,” without the assistance of his wife of more than 30 years, adding of Betsy, “She was very protective of him.”
He went on to emphasize that Betsy greatly cared for Gene’s health, sharing an example that he once saw her watering down his wine with soda water. As he put it, “She just really looked after him.”
Indeed, other friends told the newspaper that Betsy was in full control of Gene’s communications and schedule—often making social arrangements with friends on his behalf. As Tim noted, The French Connection star didn’t own his own cell phone.
But while the couple’s friends lauded Betsy as a worthy caretaker of her husband, other residents of the Santa Fe neighborhood in which they lived expressed concern over the private arrangement. A neighbor, Robert Cecil, noted to the New York Times that Gene and Betsy’s reclusiveness likely contributed to their deaths going unnoticed for more than a week, and referred to it as a “weakness.”
Over a week after Betsy and Gene were found dead in their homes Feb. 26, along with one of their three dogs, a medical examiner shared that Betsy had died from hantavirus—a respiratory illness transmitted by exposure to rodent excrement—around Feb. 11.
Gene—whom his friend told the NYT was in an “advanced” state of Alzheimer’s—likely died a week later on Feb. 18, when his pacemaker detected an abnormal heart rhythm, authorities said. The investigators emphasized that they weren’t sure if Gene was even aware his wife had died a week prior.
And Gene’s other friends concurred that the Oscar winner was “slipping” in his final months.
“Betsy tried to keep him kind of active and engaged,” friend Daniel Lenihan told People March 1, before their causes of death were confirmed. “She was still trying to keep him as active and engaged and healthy as possible.”
